Practical clipping notes

Trace clip: choosing and marking the line

A trace clip leaves the upper body covered while removing hair from the underside of the neck and lower body. A low line retains more coat than a high one. The pattern needs to suit the individual.

Decide what needs to change

Look at the sweating pattern after typical work. Note where the horse stays wet and how long drying takes. Discuss whether a bib or Irish clip could address the same issue with less coat removal.

Mark before clipping

Ask an experienced clipper to help with the first outline. Use suitable removable marking material and check the line from both sides. Agree what stays on the legs, head and back. Avoid turning symmetry into a reason to continue with a tired or unsettled horse.

Review the result

Record the date, pattern, blade and subsequent drying time. If workload or turnout changes, revisit the plan rather than automatically repeating it. Read the blade guide: pattern and blade length are separate choices.
