How to clip a horse: a preparation checklist
A guide does not replace practical instruction. For a first clip, arrange experienced supervision. Agree the pattern, equipment and stop points before starting.
1. Make a care plan
Decide why the clip is needed and what stays covered. Arrange shelter, rugs and subsequent checks. Choose a session with time for breaks.
2. Prepare the space
Use a dry, well-lit area with room for the handler. Inspect equipment and read the exact model's manual for fitting, oiling and tension. Keep supplies organised.
3. Assess the horse
The coat should be clean and dry. Check for skin concerns and whether the horse accepts the sound and vibration. Stop if the horse cannot cope.
4. Work with supervision
Lister describes a flat blade and slow movement against hair growth for its clippers. Let your instructor demonstrate; do not improvise on awkward areas. Check blade warmth and take maintenance breaks.
5. Finish and record
Check the horse and put aftercare into effect. Clean equipment as directed. Record the date, blade and pattern for next time.
