Clipper blade sizes and grades explained
A blade's stated cut length is the hair length the maker says it leaves. It is separate from the clip pattern: a trace clip made with two blades can leave different amounts of hair.
Length and compatibility
Use the exact blade reference and stated millimetres. Fine and medium are not universal cross-brand standards. Confirm compatibility with your precise clipper before buying.
Reference figures
Lister publishes Fine at 1.4 mm, Medium at 2.5 mm and Covercote at 5 mm. These are manufacturer statements. A shorter stated cut leaves less hair. Specialist options are not routine recommendations for every horse.
Limits of a number
Length alone cannot establish suitability for a skin condition or sensitive area. Read intended use and fitting instructions and seek professional advice where needed.
Explore the sourced blade entries. We keep makers separate and omit unverified ranges. Identify an old blade's reference before ordering its replacement.
Lister maker-stated blade table
Each row is specific to this maker. A grade name is not a cross-brand compatibility standard. Very short surgical cuts are shown for reference and are not routine clipping suggestions.
